God's Healing, What does the Bible Say About It?
As you read and study what has bee written here, do not just blindly accept it. Please check the Scriptures and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you His truth. The Scriptures quoted are from the King James version with the words of Jesus in red.
Any of us who have read the Bible know we serve a God who
heals. The New Testament contains descriptions of many occurrences of
healing. In fact Scripture indicates Jesus healed ALL who came to Him. One
of the questions to be asked is what type of healing occurred? This is not
an exhaustive list of occurrences of healing from Scripture, but it does
indicate the wide variety of afflictions ministered to by Christ and His
disciples. The afflictions are not listed in any particular order.
Types of Healing
Sickness and disease
Matthew 9:35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching
in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing
every sickness and every disease among the people.
Luke 9:2-6 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the
sick. And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves,
nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece. And
whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart. And
whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the
very dust from your feet for a testimony against them. 6And they departed,
and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.
Matthew 4:23-24 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their
synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner
of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. And his fame went
throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were
taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with
devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he
healed them.
Mark 3:14-15, 14And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and
that he might send them forth to preach, 15And to have power to heal
sicknesses, and to cast out devils:
Luke 9:1-2 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them
power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. And he sent them
to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
Luke 10:8-9 And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat
such things as are set before you: And heal the sick that are therein, and
say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
Matthew 10:1 And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave
them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner
of sickness and all manner of disease.
Matthew 10:5-8 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying,
Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans
enter ye not: But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And
as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick,
cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have
received, freely give.
James 5:14-17 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the
church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of
the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall
raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may
be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Acts 5:12-16 And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders
wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's
porch. And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people
magnified them. And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes
both of men and women.) Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the
streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of
Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. There came also a
multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks,
and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every
one.
Luke 6:13-19 And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and
of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles; Simon, (whom he also
named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and
Bartholomew, Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon
called Zelotes, And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which
also was the traitor. And he came down with them, and stood in the plain,
and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came
to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases; And they that were vexed
with unclean spirits: and they were healed. And the whole multitude sought
to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.
Matthew 13:13-14, 13When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into
a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed
him on foot out of the cities. 14And Jesus went forth, and saw a great
multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their
sick.
Matthew 19:1-2 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these
sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond
Jordan; And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.
Mark 1:29-34 And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue,
they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. But
Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her.
And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately
the fever left her, and she ministered unto them. And at even, when the
sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that
were possessed with devils. And all the city was gathered together at the
door. And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out
many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.
Leprosy
Matthew 10:5-8 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying,
Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans
enter ye not: But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And
as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick,
cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have
received, freely give.
Luke 17:11-19 And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he
passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered into a
certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar
off: And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy
on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto
the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.
And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a
loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving
him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there
not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that
returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him,
Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
Luke 5:12-16 And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a
man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him,
saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And he put forth his
hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the
leprosy departed from him. And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses
commanded, for a testimony unto them. But so much the more went there a
fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be
healed by him of their infirmities. And he withdrew himself into the
wilderness, and prayed.
Broken Hearted
Luke 4:18-19 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed
me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the
brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of
sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the
acceptable year of the Lord.
Lameness, Dumbness, Maimed, and Blindness
Luke 4:18-19 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed
me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the
brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of
sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the
acceptable year of the Lord.
Acts 8:4-7 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where
preaching the word. Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and
preached Christ unto them. And the people with one accord gave heed unto
those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he
did. For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that
were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame,
were healed.
Acts 14:8-10 And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet,
being a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked: The same
heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had
faith to be healed, Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And
he leaped and walked.
Acts 3:1-16 Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the
hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. And a certain man lame from his
mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple
which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple;
Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. And
Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. And he gave
heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. Then Peter said,
Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of
Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right
hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received
strength. And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into
the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. And all the people saw
him walking and praising God: And they knew that it was he which sat for
alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder
and amazement at that which had happened unto him. And as the lame man
which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them
in the porch that is called Solomon's, greatly wondering. And when Peter
saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at
this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or
holiness we had made this man to walk? The God of Abraham, and of Isaac,
and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye
delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was
determined to let him go. But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and
desired a murderer to be granted unto you; And killed the Prince of life,
whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. And his name
through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know:
yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the
presence of you all.
Matthew 15:30-31 And great multitudes came unto him, having with them
those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them
down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them: Insomuch that the multitude
wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame
to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.
Death
John 4:46-53 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the
water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at
Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee,
he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his
son: for he was at the point of death. Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye
see signs and wonders, ye will not believe. The nobleman saith unto him,
Sir, come down ere my child die. Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son
liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he
went his way. And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told
him, saying, Thy son liveth. Then enquired he of them the hour when he
began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the
fever left him. So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the
which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his
whole house.
2 Kings 20:1-6 In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet
Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD,
Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live. Then he turned
his face to the wall, and prayed unto the LORD, saying, I beseech thee, O
LORD, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect
heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept
sore. And it came to pass, afore Isaiah was gone out into the middle court,
that the word of the LORD came to him, saying, Turn again, and tell
Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy
father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal
thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD. And I
will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city
out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine
own sake, and for my servant David's sake.
Luke 8:40-56 And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the
people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him. And,
behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue:
and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into
his house: For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and
she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him. And a woman
having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon
physicians, neither could be healed of any, Came behind him, and touched
the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched.
And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were
with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest
thou, Who touched me? And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I
perceive that virtue is gone out of me. And when the woman saw that she
was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared
unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how
she was healed immediately. And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good
comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace. While he yet spake,
there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy
daughter is dead; trouble not the Master. But when Jesus heard it, he
answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.
And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter,
and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden. And all
wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth.
And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead. And he put
them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise.
And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to
give her meat. And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that
they should tell no man what was done.
Luke 7:11-15 And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city
called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people. Now
when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man
carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much
people of the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had
compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. And he came and touched
the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say
unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he
delivered him to his mother.
Mark 5:22-24 And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the
synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet, And
besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of
death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed;
and she shall live. And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him,
and thronged him.
Mark 5:35-43 While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the
synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest
thou the Master any further? As soon as Jesus heard the word that was
spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only
believe. And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and
John the brother of James. And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the
synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.
And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and
weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn.
But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the
damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was
lying. And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi;
which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise. And
straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve
years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment. And he charged
them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something
should be given her to eat.
Luke 7:2-10 And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was
sick, and ready to die. And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the
elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.
And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he
was worthy for whom he should do this: For he loveth our nation, and he
hath built us a synagogue. Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now
not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him,
Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter
under my roof: Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee:
but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. For I also am a man set
under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and
he doeth it. When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned
him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I
have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And they that were sent,
returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.
Fever
Acts 28:8-10 And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a
fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid
his hands on him, and healed him. So when this was done, others also, which
had diseases in the island, came, and were healed: Who also honoured us
with many honours; and when we departed, they laded us with such things as
were necessary.
Matthew 8:14-17 And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his
wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. And he touched her hand, and the
fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them. When the even was
come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he
cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it
might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself
took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.
Possessed with devils
Matthew 8:14-17 And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his
wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. And he touched her hand, and the
fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them. When the even was
come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he
cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it
might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself
took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.
Power and Authority over devils
Luke 9:1-2 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them
power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. And he sent them
to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
Cast out devils
Mark 3:14-15 And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and
that he might send them forth to preach, And to have power to heal
sicknesses, and to cast out devils:
Matthew 10:5-8 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying,
Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans
enter ye not: But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And
as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick,
cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have
received, freely give.
Luke 8:27-37 And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the
city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither
abode in any house, but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and
fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with
thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.
(For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For
oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in
fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the
wilderness.) And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said,
Legion: because many devils were entered into him. And they besought him
that he would not command them to go out into the deep. And there was
there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him
that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them. Then
went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran
violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked. When they
that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city
and in the country. Then they went out to see what was done; and came
to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting
at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the
devils was healed. Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them; for they were taken
with great fear: and he went up into the ship, and returned back again.
Oppressed of the devil
Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and
with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed
of the devil; for God was with him.
Healing of the Nations
Revelation 22:1-5 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as
crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst
of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of
life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month:
and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there
shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in
it; and his servants shall serve him: And they shall see his face; and his
name shall be in their foreheads.
Healing of the Water
2 Kings 2:19-23 And the men of the city said unto Elisha, Behold, I pray
thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord seeth: but the
water is naught, and the ground barren. And he said, Bring me a new cruse,
and put salt therein. And they brought it to him. And he went forth unto
the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, Thus saith
the LORD, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any
more death or barren land. So the waters were healed unto this day,
according to the saying of Elisha which he spake. And he went up from
thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth
little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up,
thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.
Uncleanness According to the Purification of the Sanctuary
2 Chronicles 30:15-20 Then they killed the passover on the fourteenth day
of the second month: and the priests and the Levites were ashamed, and
sanctified themselves, and brought in the burnt offerings into the house of
the LORD. And they stood in their place after their manner, according to
the law of Moses the man of God: the priests sprinkled the blood, which they
received of the hand of the Levites. For there were many in the
congregation that were not sanctified: therefore the Levites had the charge
of the killing of the passovers for every one that was not clean, to
sanctify them unto the LORD. For a multitude of the people, even many of
Ephraim, and Manasseh, Issachar, and Zebulun, had not cleansed themselves,
yet did they eat the passover otherwise than it was written. But Hezekiah
prayed for them, saying, The good LORD pardon every one That prepareth his
heart to seek God, the LORD God of his fathers, though he be not cleansed
according to the purification of the sanctuary. And the LORD hearkened to
Hezekiah, and healed the people.
Healing of the Land
2 Chronicles 7:12-16 And the LORD appeared to Solomon by night, and said
unto him, I have heard thy prayer, and have chosen this place to myself for
an house of sacrifice. If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I
command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my
people; If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble
themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways;
then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal
their land. Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the
prayer that is made in this place. For now have I chosen and sanctified
this house, that my name may be there for ever: and mine eyes and mine heart
shall be there perpetually.
Issue of Blood
Mark 25:25-34 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve
years, And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all
that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, When she
had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. For
she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. And
straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body
that she was healed of that plague. And Jesus, immediately knowing in
himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and
said, Who touched my clothes? And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest
the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? And he
looked round about to see her that had done this thing. But the woman
fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down
before him, and told him all the truth. And he said unto her, Daughter,
thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
Bloody Flux
Acts 28:8-10 And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a
fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid
his hands on him, and healed him. So when this was done, others also, which
had diseases in the island, came, and were healed: Who also honoured us
with many honours; and when we departed, they laded us with such things as
were necessary.
Unclean spirits
Luke 9:38-42 And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master,
I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child. And, lo, a
spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he
foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him. And I besought
thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not. And Jesus answering
said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and
suffer you? Bring thy son hither. And as he was yet a coming, the devil
threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and
healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.
Mark 3:9-12, 9And he spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait
on him because of the multitude, lest they should throng him. 10For he had
healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, as many
as had plagues. 11And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before
him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God. 12And he straitly charged
them that they should not make him known.
Mark 6:7-13 And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them
forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; And
commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff
only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse: But be shod with
sandals; and not put on two coats. And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place.
And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence,
shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I
say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day
of judgment, than for that city. And they went out, and preached that men
should repent. And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many
that were sick, and healed them.
Luke 4:31-41 And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught
them on the sabbath days. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for
his word was with power. And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a
spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, Saying, Let
us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou
come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. And
Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the
devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.
And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word
is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and
they come out. And the fame of him went out into every place of the
country round about. And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into
Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and
they besought him for her. And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever;
and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them. Now
when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases
brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and
healed them. And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying,
Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to
speak: for they knew that he was Christ.
Spirit of Infirmity
Luke 13:10-14 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.
And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen
years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. And
when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art
loosed from thine infirmity. And he laid his hands on her: and immediately
she was made straight, and glorified God. And the ruler of the synagogue
answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day,
and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in
them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.
Dropsy
Luke 14:1-6 And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the
chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.
And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. And
Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful
to heal on the sabbath day? And they held their peace. And he took him, and
healed him, and let him go; And answered them, saying, Which of you shall
have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him
out on the sabbath day? And they could not answer him again to these
things.
Palsy
Matthew 4:23-24 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their
synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner
of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. And his fame went
throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were
taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with
devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he
healed them.
Matthew 8:5-10 And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto
him a centurion, beseeching him, And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home
sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will
come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy
that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my
servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers
under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and
he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard
it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I
have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
Luke 5:17-25 And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching,
that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come
out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of
the Lord was present to heal them. And, behold, men brought in a bed a man
which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to
lay him before him. And when they could not find by what way they might
bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let
him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus.
And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven
thee. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is
this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? But
when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What
reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven
thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of
man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the
palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine
house. And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he
lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.
Lunatick
Matthew 4:23-24 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their
synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner
of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. And his fame went
throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were
taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with
devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he
healed them.
Ear that was cut off
Luke 22:48-54 But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of
man with a kiss? When they which were about him saw what would follow,
they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword? And one of them
smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And Jesus
answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed
him. Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple,
and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief,
with swords and staves? When I was daily with you in the temple, ye
stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of
darkness. Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high
priest's house. And Peter followed afar off.
Impotency
John 5:1-15 After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to
Jerusalem. Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is
called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a
great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the
moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the
pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of
the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. And a
certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. When
Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case,
he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? The impotent man answered him,
Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but
while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. Jesus saith unto him,
Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole,
and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath. The
Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is
not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. He answered them, He that made me
whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk. Then asked they
him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? And
he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away,
a multitude being in that place. Afterward Jesus findeth him in the
temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a
worse thing come unto thee. The man departed, and told the Jews that it
was Jesus, which had made him whole.
Withered Hand
Matthew 12:1-22 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the
corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of
corn, and to eat. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him,
Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath
day. But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him; How he entered into the house of God,
and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for
them which were with him, but only for the priests? Or have ye not read in
the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the
sabbath, and are blameless? But I say unto you, That in this place is one
greater than the temple. But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have
mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. For
the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day. And when he was departed
thence, he went into their synagogue: And, behold, there was a man which
had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on
the sabbath days? that they might accuse him. And he said unto them, What
man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into
a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? How
much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on
the sabbath days. Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And
he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other. Then
the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might
destroy him. But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and
great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all; And charged them
that they should not make him known: That it might be fulfilled which was
spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Behold my servant, whom I have
chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit
upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not strive,
nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. A bruised
reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send
forth judgment unto victory. And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.
Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and
he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.
Mark 3:1-5 And he entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man
there which had a withered hand. And they watched him, whether he would
heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse him. And he saith unto
the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth. And he saith unto them,
Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or
to kill? But they held their peace. And when he had looked round about on
them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith
unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his
hand was restored whole as the other.
Luke 6:7-10 And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would
heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him.
But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered
hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.
Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?
And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth
thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
Healing of unidentified Type
Luke 9:10-11 And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that
they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert
place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. And the people, when they
knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the
kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.
Matthew 8:8-13 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that
thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant
shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me:
and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he
cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard it,
he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have
not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, That many
shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and
Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the
kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and
gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as
thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in
the selfsame hour.
Luke 7:2-9 And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was
sick, and ready to die.
What can we Conclude from these Scriptures?
Christ's ministry was primarily to redeem us from our fallen sinful state.
Another of His ministries, however, was to be our source of healing. This is
made abundantly clear in the 53rd Chapter of Isaiah, verses 4 through 6
where this prophecy is spoken about Christ: "Surely He hath borne our griefs,
and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and
afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our
inequities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes
we are healed."
Isaiah 53:1-6 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the
LORD revealed? For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a
root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall
see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and
rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as
it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem
him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our
transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our
peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
Notice the wording of this Scripture. It says "we ARE healed." This is past
tense - it has already occurred. The many Scriptures, which have been noted
already, show clearly Christ as one who healed all that came to Him. Not
only did Christ heal people, but He also sent the disciples out to heal as
well. Those who were healed were suffering from a broad variety of
afflictions.
These Scriptures show those Jesus healed, or the one requesting healing of
another, were all in His presence. It also shows He treated each one in a
different manner, indicating there is no set pattern or formula to follow.
Because it is God, through the Holy Spirit, that makes one whole we must
allow Him to direct our action and prayer. Only He knows the source of the
affliction and only He can correct the condition.
F. F. Bosworth, who lived from 1877 to 1958 and had an incredible ministry
of Divine Healing writes this in his book "CHRIST THE HEALER" which was
published in 1924.
"God declares that ‘with His stripes we are healed.' I am to confess what
God says about my sickness, and hold fast to this confession. I am to
recognize the absolute truthfulness of these words in advance of any visible
change. I am to act on these words and thank Him for the fact that He laid
my sickness on Christ the same as He did my sins." ...."Because Jesus is
‘the High Priest of our confession,' our success is assured. When you
confess that ‘by His stripes I am healed' and hold on to your confession, no
disease can stand before you. Just thank the Father and praise Him whenever
a need confronts you that is covered by redemption, and it is yours. Faith
is thanking God from the heart for healing that has not yet been manifested.
We are as sure of this as if it were manifested."
To understand the importance of this we should consider the instruction
contained in verses 20 to 22 of the fourth chapter of Proverbs.
Proverbs 4:20-22 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my
sayings. 21Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of
thine heart. 22For they are life unto those that find them, and health to
all their flesh.
This instructs us to do three things: first, we are to have an attentive ear
to the words of God; secondly, we are to steadfastly look upon them; and
thirdly, we must enshrine them in or upon our heart. When we do these three
things, we will have gained life and health.
We are further instructed in verses 2 and 3 of Psalm 103 to "Bless the Lord"
and "forget not all His benefits" to be forgiven of ALL our sins and healed
of ALL our diseases.
Psalm 103:2-3 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;
Matthew tells us that Jesus healed all that were sick thereby fulfilling the
prophecy which was spoken by the Old Testament prophet Esaias.
Matthew 8:16-17 When the even was come, they brought unto him many that
were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and
healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our
sicknesses.
We are commanded to have the elders of the church anoint us with oil in the
name of the Lord and to pray over us when we are sick.
James 5:14-15 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the
church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of
the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall
raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him
The word of God is truth. While it may be delivered to you by man, it is not
man's word but has been spoken by God to man and is truth which is to be
believed.
1 Thessalonians 2:13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing,
because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received
it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which
effectually worketh also in you that believe.
Paul, in 1 Corinthians 12, describes the gifts of the spirit and he includes
the gift of healing. And in Hebrews 13:8, Christ is described as being the
same yesterday, today, and forever. These two Scriptures would indicate we
should expect to be healed in our lifetime, not at some future ‘bye and bye
time.'
1 Corinthians 12:8-11 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of
wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another
faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same
Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to
another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to
another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and
the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
We know of many who have come before the Lord in prayer for a healing touch
from Jesus and been healed. There are, however, many more who have not been
healed when they were prayed for which seems contrary to Scripture. The
explanations for those who were not healed are as many as the ones who
prayed for them. Most of the explanations tend to be an excuse for our human
failing rather than the admittance that our God is the one who heals, not
us. We may never know, why some are healed and others not, until that day
when we see Jesus face-to-face and can ask Him about it. In the meantime we
must trust what the Scriptures say about healing. Our prayer for healing
should be offered in faith, believing it has been heard by God, along with
the knowledge that it is His will to heal us. When you combine these
instructions and conclusions it seems clear to me that it is God's intention
that ALL who come into His presence seeking to be made whole will be healed.
